Serbian Songstress Wins Eurovision Contest

serbian.jpg

Serbia’s Marija Serifovic sang a “Prayer” to win the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest early Sunday. It was Serbia’s first appearance in the competition as an independent nation after Serbia-Montenegro split last year. Eastern European countries took 14 of the top 16 spots in the finals. Serbia, enjoying its victory took to the streets in many major cities to celebrate. The contest was hosted by Finland this year, and it was mighty cold as they say in Helsinki’s main square.

The contest included circus acts, singing, and even some fiery pyrotechnics. I would say that this is their American Idol, but they already have several European versions of the show. It suppose it is more of a tribute to all musical culture, in addition to being a big plug for the television station. Congrats Marija and Serbia for such a great debut.
