Akon Smacks It

A new video has surfaced featuring Akon and his girl-smacking concert in Guyana. The singer’s people claim that the footage tells a much different story that the shorter, edited version that’s been heating up the blogs recently. The longer version shows what happens directly after Akon nails two women who got too close to the singer. If you’ve seen the shorter version, you know that it cuts off right after the whacking. I’m not sure if it completely vindicates the guy but you can check out the new video and judge for yourself. I doubt hitting a woman can be forgiven easily though.

Solange Celebration

Solange Knowles celebrated the release of her new album at Prive Nightclub inside Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada recently. The 22-year old singer managed to debut at number 9 on the charts with her second album ‘Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams’. The singer kicked off her album release week with a performance on ‘Late Night with David Letterman’ and an appearance on BET’s 106 & Park which both aired on the last week of August. If Solange can hold on to any spot on the chart, it’s likely that she and her sister Beyonce will be seeing each other as the elder Knowles will be releasing her untitled third solo album in the United States on November 18.

Rihannas VMAs Times 2

Rihanna hit the stage with a performance of ‘It’s Your Life’ at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards which was held at Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles last weekend. She may not have won as many awards as I would have liked but she took to the stage two times. That definitely made it up for me. Rihanna also took advantage of the dramatic stage sets and made two very memorable performances. When did you ever see an artist take the stage twice in an awards show when there were a lot of very capable performers in the crowd? It looks like everybody wanted to see more of Rihanna than the average awards show crowd.

VMA Success

2008’s MTV Video Music Awards definitely delivered as the ratings were 15% higher in the key 18-34 demographic than the 2007 broadcast and 41% higher than in 2006. The show was also the highest-rated telecast in all of cable in the 12-34 demographic this year. It’s obvious that casting the unknown British comic Russell Brand didn’t hurt them any. Even MTV.com got a boost this year at its VMA-related pages delivered more than 10 million page views – a 110% increase over the last year. But we all know that there’s a certain someone that MTV needs to thank for the massive ratings – Britney Spears. You know you tuned it just to see her.
