Sir Paul McCartney has spoken out about his relationship with John Lennon and denied reports that they didn’t get on.
Sir Paul, 66, has revealed the truth about his friendship with his Beatles bandmate, who was shot dead outside his home in 1980.
The singer denied claims that John had complained in interviews that he had ruined songs by not committing enough creative energy to them.
Sir Paul said: “Oh, he was on drugs, wasn’t he? This is the trouble with history, with journalism. John said so much c**p that he later said he hadn’t meant. It’s bulls**t.”
He also told the UK’s Radio Times magazine: “The image of John is seriously flawed because he was not the hard, mad man that people think he was. He was a very soft-centred guy and we had a lot more in common than people think.
“Whatever bad things John said about me, he would also slip his glasses down to the end of his nose and say, ‘I love you’. That’s really what I hold on to. That’s what I believe. The rest is showing off.”

Sir Paul McCartney was chased down by 50 Miss USA finalists after they found out he was staying near to their hotel.
The girls were staying at the Planet Hollywood when they realised the star was staying at the hotel opposite.
A source said: "One girl heard Paul was playing a gig here and hunted him down. They were staying at Planet Hollywood, where the contest was being staged, and found Macca’s hotel was across the road."
The source added to British newspaper the Daily Mirror: "It was impossible to stop them and they were screeching with excitement. All 50 booked in for dinner there in hope of stumbling across him."
The source added: "Paul declined as he probably felt girlfriend Nancy Shevell wouldn’t be so enthralled. A couple of the girls even ran a competition to see who would be the first to get a picture or autograph and no one even managed that."
