Carrie Underwood has had picture perfect success recently. While the 26-year old American Idol alum has seen nothing but that since she started her professional career, she’s still giving us reminders that she’s on top. Carrie was revealed to have raked in $14 million last year. She was far and away the top earner for all Idol alums. Jennifer Hudson came in second with $5 million, Kelly Clarkson with $4.2 million, Jordin Sparks with $3.1 million and rounding out the top 5 was Kellie Pickler with $2.3 million. Hmm, I wonder why David Cook and David Archuleta aren’t on the list.

It shouldn’t be surprising that Madonna is on the top of the list of the highest earning musicians of the past year. Adding ticket, album and download sales to figure which music acts were the past year’s most popular, the Queen of Pop came in an overwhelming first place. Madonna raked in a whopping $120.1 million domestically and $281.6 million worldwide. Congratulations! Celine Dion ($106.8 million), Kenny Chesney ($95.7 million), Eagles ($90.7 million), AC/DC ($82 million), Coldplay ($81.6 million), Bon Jovi ($81.4 million), Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band ($79 million), Jonas Brothers ($77.9 million) and Rascal Flatts ($77.1 million) composed the rest of the top ten.

The economy continues to make me deliver some sad news. The famous Times Square Virgin Megastore in New York City is shutting down. The store was the highest selling music store in the US with annual sales of $55 million. Back in August 2007, Virgin Entertainment Group was sold to 2 real estate companies which had people wondering about the future of the stores. The Times Square store will be closing this April and will leave Virgin with just 5 stores – 1 of them will be the Manhattan Union Square store which only has an estimated $40 million annual sales volume. But the future of that store is still questionable as the new owners will be deciding what to do with the rest of the locations over the next few months.

Country singer Taylor Swift has reclaimed the #1 billing and with that the top spot on the Billboard’s U.S. pop album chart for the third time in non-consecutive weeks. That is remarkable in some ways because after taking the top spot her album did see a dip and has climbed back to that position not once but twice.
This is a clear indication for her growing popularity and the nineteen year-old took the spot on Wednesday with her release Fearless, which sold 330,000 copies on the week ending December 21.
Taylor’s narrowly beat R&B star Keyshia Cole, her debut album A Different Me sold 322,000 copies, taking in the number two spot in its opening week. Singer/actor Jamie Foxx who was also making his debut with the album Intuition grabbed the 3rd spot, with sales of 265,000 copies.
But what is really heartening to see it that Britney Spears successful comeback seems to be continuing for now with Circus selling 196,000 copies which put Britney at the forth position. In fifth place is Beyonce with her release I Am…Sasha Fierce, which sold 195,000.

Taylor Swift can now stop having to make digs about ex-boyfriends just so she could get some attention as she has just beaten Joe Jonas’ butt by topping the US Billboard charts with her second album ‘Fearless’ which sold over 592,000 copies in its debut week. That means that Taylor has one of the biggest opening week sales in 2008 by a female artist. She’s also the fourth biggest overall coming behind Lil Wayne, AC/DC and Coldplay. Taylor also managed to beat the Jonas Brothers on the charts as their latest album sold about 525,000 on its first week. Taylor is getting geared up for global domination as well as her album will be released worldwide early next year.

Beyonce’s new double CD, I Am…Sasha Fierce, will be the #1 album by next week, says HITS Daily Double.
They claim that the album is expected to sell sell between 500 and 550K total.
Unfortunately, that number is not enough to match country sweetheart Taylor Swift’s sales.
The country girl sold 592k copies of her latest debut out of stores.
As of the moment there is a three way battle for next week’s #2 spot.
It’s still too close to call, but it will either be David Cook, Nickelback, or Taylor Swift.

Mariah Carey turned every bit the diva when she was on Radio One on Sunday. The curvaceous singer did her very best Madonna “I’m a Brit†impression but then got her panties in a bunch when the radio host inadvertently said she’s only sold 80 million records. ONLY!!! Mariah then countered the number and said that her record sales are actually closer to 160 million when the call was mysteriously dropped. Did she hang upon the radio interview? Talk about being a diva. It’s almost as egotistical as George Michael saying there’s going to be movies made on his life.

The Idols and the Disney stars are rulers of the 2007 music scene. The music industry may be dying but they were still able to make something of it.Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood are the most notable Idols of 2007. Here’s some proof that Mariah Carey is pretty much a household name. She doesn’t have a new album out yet she has a Top Ten single without even exerting any effort. She better thank the people who said that digital downloads count for something towards chart success. Her ‘All I Want for Christmas’ is #8 this week in the US according to Soundscan. It looks like people are really into the holiday spirit as Josh Groban’s Christmas album actually took the top spot by selling over 500,000 records this past week and he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Who knew Santa can be a big capitalist ploy?

When you make predictions, there’s always this chance that it won’t come true. But in the case of Alicia Keys, it did come true and was even better than we thought.
The Soundscan numbers are in and Alicia’s new album ‘As I Am’ sold 742,426 copies in the US since it debuted last week. That’s amazing! What’s even more amazing is that it sold three times as many copies as the #2 disc sold.
Josh Groban took the second spot with his Christmas album ‘Noel’ which sold 223,306 copies even though it’s been out for a few weeks already. Celine Dion’s ‘Taking Chances’ took 3rd by selling 214,381 copies.

Jay-Z scores his 10th No. 1 album on The Billboard 200, as “American Gangster” (Def Jam) debuts on top this week after selling 425,000 copies in the United States. The rapper thus ties Elvis Presley in second place for the most No. 1 albums on the chart; only the Beatles have had more, with 19.
Since 1998, all eight of Jay-Z’s solo studio albums have hit No. 1, in addition to his “Collision Course” project with Linkin Park and his “Unfinished Business” collaboration with R. Kelly.
After bowing at No. 1 last week, the Eagles’ “Long Road Out of Eden” (Eagles Recording Co.) slips to No. 2 with 359,000, a 49% sales decrease. Garth Brooks’ “The Ultimate Hits” (Pearl) debuts at No. 3 after shifting 352,000 units. Brooks’ last studio set, 2001’s “Scarecrow,” debuted at No. 1 with 466,000. His only releases since then have been Wal-Mart exclusives and were thus not eligible to appear on The Billboard 200.

Looks like another musical head-to-head is about to go on, but this time, it’s between British babes. Leona Lewis’ debut album comes out next week in the UK, the same time that the Spice Girls are releasing their Greatest Hits CD. And wouldn’t you know it? The X-Factor winner is pretty much guaranteed the top spot!
Leona’s ‘Spirit’ is outselling the Spice Girls’ Greatest Hits by 6 to 1 in pre-sales. Her album is even expected to surpass the Artic Monkeys’ ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ are the biggest-selling pre-release of the year. A projected 500,000 albums for her first effort is on for next week.
Not bad who used to work at a Pizza Hut not long ago.

If there’s still doubt about it, this should erase them all. The Backstreet Boys are most definitely back!
Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough and AJ McLean made their first live TV debut performance as the newly reformed group of four on the Wednesday edition of Regis & Kelly Halloween special.
The foursome performed their new single ‘Inconsolable’ off their latest album ‘Unbreakable’ which has already hit the stores this week.
I still think it’s odd to not see a boy band with five people in it. There’s the former Backstreet Boys, the former 5ive, the former NSYNC. But hey, whatever.

Even if you don’t listen to her album and just judge it by what she’s been doing over the time it was recorded and promoted, you all know the Britney Spears’ ‘Blackout’ album is pretty much the nail in the coffin of her career. The Wall Street Journal thinks so too when they did a review on her album.
They said “A phalanx of producers and backing vocalists exert more of an influence on a disc that’s not quite a mess but only occasionally rises above a muddle… as a vocalist, Ms. Spears sounds weary, snide and at times disconnected. On some songs, her voice seems grafted to the material as if an afterthought… At the bottom register, her voice is a throaty bleat… With Blackout, Ms. Spears fails to deliver a recording that will re-establish her as a dominant pop star rather than a 25-year-old woman who seems bent on self-destruction.”

Jennifer Lopez recently suffered a tragedy in her family when her grandmother died last weekend but as they say in showbiz, the show must go on. And go on it did when the Latina singer performed a two-song set on the results show of ‘Dancing With The Stars’ on Tuesday. She sang her latest single ‘Do It Well’ and an old dance favorite ‘Let’s Get Loud’.
But there’s another low coming at JLo and it’s in the form of her career. Her new album ‘Brave’ only sold 53,000 copies in the first week of its release. She needs some happy news like celebrating the birth of a new baby. Or maybe even babies!

Ricky Martin laid himself down alongside his star on the Hollywood Walk on Fame on Tuesday in Hollywood, California.
Finally! After being the cutie pie of Menudo for years and shaking his bon bon to make fans go wild, it’s about time he gets a star. The Honorary Mayor of Hollywood, Johnny Grant was there to congratulate Ricky on selling 55 million records worldwide. Wow!
The Puerto Rican singer is the 2351st person to get a star on the famous walk. That takes a little of the thunder away but eh. He still has a star and that’s all that matters.

All you Spice Girls fanatics get ready because their much anticipated Greatest Hits album is almost here. The CD, which features 13 of their best selling hits along with 3 remix dance versions of old songs, just went on presale and will go on until midnight of Thursday October 18 only on the Victoria’s Secret website. I just wait for it, it should be awesome and I personally think that this Greatest Hits album has a chance to create a record of sorts when it goes on sale for the most number of copies order in an hour for a Greatest Hits album. Well on the other hand even if the album doesn’t create any records during the first day of sales I think the band has already created enough hoop hoola for their upcoming world tour that all these marketing gimmicks and heavy promotions are going to land them huge tickets sales and millions of dollars in revenues.
