Cheryl Cole is #1

Girls Aloud member and X Factor judge Cheryl Cole has a lot to celebrate. The singer is now one of the few female artists ever to achieve simultaneously a UK number 1 single and album. I expected absolutely nothing less from her. Cheryl’s debut solo album ‘3 Words’ opened in the top spot while her single ‘Fight for this Love’ arrived at number 1 last week. The single has also been dubbed the UK’s fastest selling single of the year and has held on to the top honor for the second week. Congratulations Cheryl! I wonder if any of her band mates can match what she’s done.

Green Day Premieres Video for New Single “21 Guns”

Green Day has just premiered the video for their new single, “21 Guns,” exclusively on MySpace Music. The video was helmed by noted director Marc Webb, who has lensed clips for such artists as My Chemical Romance, Weezer, and All-American Rejects, and is making his feature film directorial debut in July with (500) Days of Summer.

“21 Guns” is the second single from the band’s latest album 21st Century Breakdown, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, as well as on the Rock, Active Rock, and Alternative charts, fueled by the Alternative radio No. 1 single “Know Your Enemy.” 21st Century Breakdown, which Rolling Stone has called “a rock opera in which the rock always comes first,” also topped the charts in 24 countries including the UK, Canada, and Japan.

Over the past month, Green Day has continued to work with MySpace Music for the promotion of 21st Century Breakdown. During the week of the album’s release, they played an exclusive concert in New York City which was filmed for the site’s premiere online concert program, The List. The performance can now be seen on The List’s official MySpace profile.

This year’s show will take place at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, August 9th, and air the next day, Monday, August 10th, on FOX at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can vote for Green Day at http://www.teenchoiceawards.com/.

Green Day, which is singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool, are preparing to launch their first proper tour of the United States and Canada in more than three years. The tour runs from July 3rd through August 25th. Please visit http://www.greenday.com/ for more details.

Brits Choose Madonna

The British have made up their mind and the numbers definitely show that they prefer their adopted child Madonna over Mariah Carey. The chart results have recently been announced and the Queen of Pop’s new album ‘Hard Candy’ has topped the UK charts by coming in at the #1 spot. Mariah’s ‘E=MC2’ only managed to debut at #3 on the album charts. Additionally, Madonna’s ‘4 Minutes (To Save the World)’ is at #1 for a 3rd week on the UK singles chart. She doesn’t stop there as ‘Hard Candy’ also takes the top spot in more than 25 countries as more numbers roll in. Congratulations!

Mariah Carey Effortless

blog1-mariah-carey.jpg

Here’s some proof that Mariah Carey is pretty much a household name. She doesn’t have a new album out yet she has a Top Ten single without even exerting any effort. She better thank the people who said that digital downloads count for something towards chart success. Her ‘All I Want for Christmas’ is #8 this week in the US according to Soundscan. It looks like people are really into the holiday spirit as Josh Groban’s Christmas album actually took the top spot by selling over 500,000 records this past week and he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Who knew Santa can be a big capitalist ploy?

Chris Brown Still Tops Chart

chris-brown.jpg

Chris Brown’s Kiss Kiss hit has claimed a third week at the top of the singles chart. The track held off competition from Alicia Keys’ No One, which jumped up a spot to number two on the new chart. I Like His Song Wall to Wall as well. What’s excited me is that I always love it when there are fresh new stars that top the charts rather than having the likes of Justin Timberlake, 50 Cent, Jay-Z and Kanye West dominate the charts. It argues well for the music industry to have new stars on the scene like Soulja Boy and Sean Kingston. Timbaland’s Apologize slides to three, while Soulja Boy’s Crank That (Soulja Boy) refuses to slip out of the top five - it holds steady at four. Three week’s at the top is like it has to be great music and people are buying the CDs a lot give the number the thrust to remain on top of the singles chart.

Jay-Z Hits No. 1 on Billboards 200

jay-z.jpg

Jay-Z scores his 10th No. 1 album on The Billboard 200, as “American Gangster” (Def Jam) debuts on top this week after selling 425,000 copies in the United States. The rapper thus ties Elvis Presley in second place for the most No. 1 albums on the chart; only the Beatles have had more, with 19.

Since 1998, all eight of Jay-Z’s solo studio albums have hit No. 1, in addition to his “Collision Course” project with Linkin Park and his “Unfinished Business” collaboration with R. Kelly.

After bowing at No. 1 last week, the Eagles’ “Long Road Out of Eden” (Eagles Recording Co.) slips to No. 2 with 359,000, a 49% sales decrease. Garth Brooks’ “The Ultimate Hits” (Pearl) debuts at No. 3 after shifting 352,000 units. Brooks’ last studio set, 2001’s “Scarecrow,” debuted at No. 1 with 466,000. His only releases since then have been Wal-Mart exclusives and were thus not eligible to appear on The Billboard 200.

Leona Has More Spice

blog7-leona-lewis.jpg

Looks like another musical head-to-head is about to go on, but this time, it’s between British babes. Leona Lewis’ debut album comes out next week in the UK, the same time that the Spice Girls are releasing their Greatest Hits CD. And wouldn’t you know it? The X-Factor winner is pretty much guaranteed the top spot!

Leona’s ‘Spirit’ is outselling the Spice Girls’ Greatest Hits by 6 to 1 in pre-sales. Her album is even expected to surpass the Artic Monkeys’ ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ are the biggest-selling pre-release of the year. A projected 500,000 albums for her first effort is on for next week.

Not bad who used to work at a Pizza Hut not long ago.

Rihanna’s Performance at WMA

blog5-rihanna.jpg

Rihanna changed from her shining green dress on the red carpet to a very supportive strapless black dress complete with poofy polka skirt when she took the stage to perform at the 2007 World Music Award in Monte Carlo, Monaco on Sunday.

I’m sure that after her performance, the Barbados-born beauty took some time to thank the heavens that she did not have any wardrobe malfunctions. Although, I think that the likes of Prince Albert of Monaco was hoping for that as the principality was snapped taking a good look at what Rihanna had to offer.

On a different note, congratulations goes to Rihanna for picking up the award for World’s Best Selling Pop Female Artist.

Akon - Don’t Matter

finesse_akon_gate-crasher.jpg

It seems like Akon is inescapable today. His most recent solo hits “Smack That” and “I Wanna Love You” spent multiple weeks simultaneously in the top 10, and Akon has a flashy guest appearance on Gwen Stefani’s current top 10 hit “The Sweet Escape.” Unfortunately, too often Akon’s music utilizes easy gimmicks to gain attention. This moves the song quickly up the chart but doesn’t wear well with listeners. Fortunately, “Don’t Matter” is largely lacking in gimmickry and lingers longer in the brain’s music pleasure centers.

Fortunately, “Don’t Matter,” finding Akon in an even more laidback ballad mood than his makeout tune “I Wanna Love You,” is devoid of gimmicks and annoying hooks. Akon’s pleasing voice, both singing and rapping, is showcased over a laidback groove. Lyrically the words of defiant, committed love in the face of disapproval will strike a chord with many pop fans. Stick with the song all the way through and you’ll be rewarded with a percussive party section at the end that will put a smile on your face and might even make you move.

“Don’t Matter” is likely to help maintain Akon’s string of weeks with 2 singles in the pop top 10. It is nearly assured of joining “The Sweet Escape” making Akon’s sweet tenor continue to seem ubiquitous on pop radio.
